Can I use my easyname email addresses with external nameservers?

Whether you can use your easyname email addresses with external nameservers, such as those from Cloudflare, depends on your management system. In CloudPit, this is possible if the required DNS records are configured correctly. In the Controlpanel, the easyname mail service works exclusively with the easyname nameservers.

Can I use external nameservers in CloudPit and continue receiving emails?

Yes. If you manage your email addresses in CloudPit, you can use external nameservers. For email delivery to continue working, the following records must be configured with the external DNS provider for your domain.

1. Set up MX records

Create the following two MX records with the external DNS provider:

Type Name Priority Target
MX @ 10 mx03.secure-mailgate.com
MX @ 10 mx04.secure-mailgate.com

The @ symbol stands for your domain without an additional subdomain. Depending on the DNS provider, this field may also be left blank or have a different name.

Both MX records must be present and have a priority of 10.

2. Set up an A record for mail-in

You also need an A record with the name mail-in. This must point to the IP address of the web server for your hosting package in CloudPit.

Type Name Target
A mail-in IP address of the web server in CloudPit

You must create the A record for your own domain. For the domain example.at, for example, the complete hostname is mail-in.example.at.

Important: For the mail-in A record, use the actual IP address of your web server from CloudPit. Do not enter the IP address of the external nameservers or an arbitrary mail server IP address.

If you use additional DNS records for your email service, such as SPF or DKIM records, these must also be configured with the external DNS provider according to your CloudPit configuration.

Can I use my email addresses from the Controlpanel with external nameservers?

No. If you manage your email addresses through the easyname Controlpanel, the easyname mail service works only with the easyname nameservers.

When using external nameservers, such as those from Cloudflare, the existing email addresses cannot continue to be operated through this mail service.

Important: Transferring the MX records mx01.easyname.eu and mx02.easyname.eu to an external DNS provider is not sufficient to continue using the Controlpanel's email service. The easyname nameservers must be used for this.

How can I tell whether I am using CloudPit or the Controlpanel?

The mail servers in use may provide an indication of your email infrastructure:

  • Controlpanel: The mail servers mx01.easyname.eu and mx02.easyname.eu belong to the Controlpanel mail infrastructure.
  • CloudPit: The mail servers mx03.secure-mailgate.com and mx04.secure-mailgate.com are used for the email service described here.

If you are not sure which system manages your email addresses, check your hosting package in CloudPit or the Controlpanel.

What do I need to consider before changing nameservers?

Before making the change, check which management system your email addresses are set up in and which DNS records are required for your domain.

  • CloudPit: Set up both MX records and the mail-in A record with the external DNS provider before switching to the external nameservers.
  • Controlpanel: Keep the easyname nameservers if you want to continue using your existing email addresses through the easyname mail service.

Keep in mind that changing nameservers also affects other DNS records for your domain. Therefore, make sure that all required records are available with the new DNS provider.

Instructions for changing nameservers can be found in the article Changing a domain's nameservers.
