TLD stands for Top-Level Domain. A Top-Level Domain refers to domain extensions such as .com, .net, .org, and the like. Each TLD is managed by a specific authority (a so-called registry). Currently, in addition to generic Top-Level Domains (gTLDs), there are also country-specific Top-Level Domains (country-code TLDs or ccTLDs). While country-specific TLDs are generated from the corresponding country codes of their country—for Austria .at, Germany .de, and Switzerland .ch—generic domain extensions can be further divided into sponsored (sTLDs) and unsponsored (uTLDs).
While unsponsored TLDs are managed by ICANN and the Internet Society, sponsored TLDs are proposed domains by certain companies and organizations that are used according to previously agreed-upon guidelines.
Meeting certain requirements may potentially be necessary. Anyone who wants to operate a domain with a sponsored TLD should inform themselves in advance about certain conditions and guidelines for using such a TLD.
If the requirements are not met, sanctions are at the discretion of the registry. These range from disconnection to deletion of the domain. For example, if you choose a .mobi TLD, the content of the provided website should in any case be properly displayed on mobile phones.
Examples of sponsored TLDs include .travel (travel) or .xxx (sex).
Here, there are generally no conditions or guidelines that must be followed. Unsponsored TLDs are domain extensions that have three or more characters and can be assigned to a certain group. Popular domains are .net (network), .org (organization), .com (commercial), .biz (business), or .name (name).
Country-specific Top-Level Domains are used for many different reasons. In addition to the reference to the respective country, some particularly popular ccTLDs allow for interesting combinations and hints.
For example, the Top-Level Domain .me (Montenegro) is extremely popular for wordplays such as like.me. Micronesia’s .fm domain is, fittingly, in high demand among music providers, and Tuvalu’s .tv domain is popular among television stations.
Dedicated Top-Level Domains for cities open up new perspectives, especially for local businesses.
Advantages of city-specific Top-Level Domains:
This automatically means that these domains make the most sense when you operate a location in that city or region or provide information about that place/region.
