Transferring a domain to easyname without service interruptions

If you want to transfer your domain, including your website and email addresses, to easyname, you should complete the steps in the correct order. This can help prevent outages affecting your website or email services.

Upon request, we can handle the domain and service transfer as part of our Premium Services. We first check whether a migration without interruptions is possible.

Do not change nameservers or DNS records until your website, email addresses, and required DNS records have been prepared at easyname. Switching too early can cause your website or emails to become unavailable.

This guide differs depending on the system (CloudPit or Controlpanel). Use the appropriate section.

Prepare the domain and services in CloudPit

Add an external domain

First, add the domain as an external domain in CloudPit. The domain will remain registered with the previous provider for now.

Open your web hosting package in CloudPit. Click MORE and then Add external domain.

CloudPit displays a unique TXT record to confirm ownership. This record begins with site-verification=.

Add this TXT record at your domain's current DNS provider.

Prepare DNS records

For the external domain, open MORE → External domain setup.

To migrate without interruptions, first select that DNS management remains with the previous provider.

Then copy the required DNS records from the wizard and add them at the previous DNS provider.

If you want to use easyname's email service with externally managed nameservers, add the following records at the external DNS provider:

  • MX record 1: Name @, target mx03.secure-mailgate.com, priority 10.
  • MX record 2: Name @, target mx04.secure-mailgate.com, priority 10.
  • A record mail-in: The hostname mail-in must point to the IP address of the web server for your CloudPit hosting.
  • TXT records, such as SPF or DKIM records
  • Additional DNS records, if they are displayed in the wizard

Use the actual web server IP address of your CloudPit hosting for the mail-in A record. Check all required DNS records before changing the nameservers. This configuration applies to CloudPit, not to the Controlpanel mail service.

For more information, see the article Can I use my easyname email addresses with external nameservers?.

Create email addresses and mailboxes

If you want to transfer email addresses from the previous provider, create them in CloudPit before switching over.

To do so, open Email → Email addresses in the web hosting package and create the required addresses and mailboxes.

Transfer the website

Transfer the website data and, if applicable, the databases to easyname.

For more information, see: How can I transfer my website to easyname?

Start the domain transfer

Start the domain transfer only after the website, email addresses, and DNS records have been prepared.

Then contact Support to initiate the domain transfer.

Prepare the domain and services in the Controlpanel

Important for email in the Controlpanel: The easyname mail service in the Controlpanel works only with easyname nameservers. If you want to continue using these email addresses through easyname, you must retain or use the easyname nameservers for the domain. Transferring only the MX records mx01.easyname.eu and mx02.easyname.eu to an external DNS provider is not sufficient.

Prepare DNS records

At the previous provider, identify all required DNS records, especially:

  • A records
  • MX records
  • TXT records
  • SRV records, if applicable

Then recreate these records in the Controlpanel under Domains → DNS for the affected domain.

A records and MX records only need to be transferred if the website or email service should continue to point to the previous services.

Create email addresses and mailboxes

If you want to transfer email addresses from the previous provider, create them in the Controlpanel before switching over.

Open Web hosting → Email mailboxes and create the required mailboxes.

Then, under Domains → desired domain → Email, create the required email addresses and link them to the appropriate mailboxes.

Start the domain transfer

Start the domain transfer only after the website, email addresses, and DNS records have been prepared.

In the Controlpanel, open Domains → Transfer domains.

Add the desired domain transfer to your cart.

During the ordering process, enable the option Configure domain(s) automatically (recommended).

This changes the nameservers to easyname. If all DNS records were transferred correctly beforehand, the website and email services will remain accessible.

Which domain extensions can be transferred to easyname?

Not every domain extension can be registered with or transferred to easyname. Whether a domain extension is available depends on technical, legal, contractual, or registry requirements.

The Domain and TLD list is always authoritative. A domain extension can only be registered or transferred if it is offered there, can be selected, and is available for the desired process.

If a domain extension is not offered in the Domain and TLD list, cannot be selected there, or is not offered there for registration or transfer, registering or transferring that domain extension through easyname is not possible.
