The .pw domain is the official country-specific top-level domain for Palau. It was originally assigned to the island nation in the Pacific Ocean with a population of about 21,000 in June 1997. After introducing the top-level domain, the American company EnCirca Inc. has managed all administrative tasks but now the competent registry is headquartered in Palau. In October 2012 it was announced that the top-level domain .pw should be promoted as a synonym for "professional web" - to aim this goal, the competent registry decided to overhaul the guidelines of domain registration.

The .pw top-level domain could be used for a lot of different purposes: private individuals as well as companies related to the State of Palau are able to underline an economic, cultural or ethnic connection to the island nation by the registration of a country-specific top-level domain. In addition, the domain currently establishes on the global market as a synonym for "professional web".
